Fairly difficult trek

TREK IN QUIMSA CRUZ RANGE OF THE ANDES (7 DAYS)

The natural beauty of Quimsa Cruz is ideal, not only for climbing but for walking in deep canyons as well. It is 40 Kms. long and 13 Kms. Wide.. The north side is formed by rocky peaks of granodiorite that look somewhat similar to the famous Chamonix aiguilles. The south is mainly covered by glaciers. It contains around 80 peaks from 4900 m to 5800 m high, mostly unclimbed. It is divided into the following regions: Araca (North), Choquetanga (central)and Quimsa Cruz (South).

Day 1: From La Paz we have a drive of 6 hours in 4WD’s of 6 hours as far as the Caracoles mine. Camp past Caracoles at the banks of the Khota Kuchu lagoon at 4660 m high.

Day 2: We pass by brilliant blue lakes, alpine meadows and a wealth of wildlife, as very few people venture up into the mountains themselves. 3 hour climb up to the San Enrique pass (4950 m high). 4 hour descent to the next camp at Chatamarka Lagoon  (4700 m high).

Day 3: 3 hours up to the Khollu Grande pass (5100 m high). 5 hour smooth descent to camp near the   Calachaca River(3700 m high).

Day 4: 3 hour easy walk down to the hamlet of Choquetanga Chico and turn around to walk up 4 hours along the Jalancha valley to reach our next camp at 3400 m high.

Day 5: A long but easy uphill walk of 6 hours to reach up the pass of the  Obelisk peak (4900 m high); we traverse among deep valleys at times becoming deep gullies formed naturally by the prominent high rocky peaks like Devil Horns, Gerhard and   others. An hour descent to Chillwa Khota Lagoon to camp at 4560 m high. Spectacular sunset.

Day 6: 3 hour descent to the village of "Estancia Tenería" to stay overnight in an alpine style hut surrounded by a green temperate forest at 3050 m high.

Day 7: We drive 6 hours by the spectacular canyon of the La Paz river and the flanks of Mt. Illimani to arrive back in La Paz again.

EXTENSIONS: Ideal combination with “Trek North Illimani”.

TECHNICAL INFO: We require that participants minimize the weight of the luggage taking only the most useful and practical gear for the trek in order to avoid unnecessary weight in the porters.
